India’s Iron Man Awaits National Memorial

Vadodara: He may have successfully integrated 565 princely states with Indian union, but India’s Iron Man is yet to have a national memorial in his name.

As the country observed 133rd birth anniversary on Friday, demands for a national memorial after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel are only growing louder.

While two Gujarat - based trust are lobbying to get a national memorial status, Delhi - based Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Foundation has launched an online campaign to convert Sardar Patel House on Aurangzeb Road into Sardar Patel Memorial in Delhi.

“It was at Sardar Patel House on Aurangzeb Road that Sardar stayed during his tenure as Deputy Prime Minister of the country. Presently, a family stays in the house. But. we have launched a campaign to vacate the official residence and convert it into a memorial ,” Chairman of the Foundation Ram Avtaar Sastry told TOI.

According to Sastry, the family claims it is heir private property, which they had occupied from GOI after Sardar’s demise in 1950. “The government can still interfere if it wants Sardar’s official residence to be converted into a memorial,” said Sastry.
